Each parent wants to enjoy a quality of life and to have harmony in their family. Yet, too often, this seems but a dream.
Each day, there seems to be new challenges to be met:
· tantrums
· arguments
· mood changes
· unco-operative behaviour
· alcohol misuse
· illicit drug use
· lack of commitment to school
· coping with teenage behaviour
Understanding our role as a parent and knowing that some techniques are more effective than others in changing children’s behaviour can have a positive benefit for our quality of life.
Australia’s leading parenting experts come together for the very first time to provide Victorian parents with positive, informative and practical parenting advice.
The Powerful Parenting full day workshops to be held in August 2002, present a unique opportunity for parents to gain expert insight from Australia’s foremost authorities in child and adolescent behaviour:
• Dr Michael Carr-Gregg
• John S Cheetham
• Andrew Fuller
• Michael Grose
• Dr Judith Paphazy.
These top psychologists and presenters, on stage together for the very first time, are joined by dual Olympian Dr Lee Naylor.
Dr Michael Carr-Gregg was described recently by The Sunday Age as one of Australia’s leading authorities on teenage behaviour, Michael is an Adolescent Psychologist working at the Albert Road Centre for Health in Melbourne. Best known as the Founder of CanTeen - teenage cancer patients support group, he now specialises in the area of parenting adolescents and adolescent mental health. His first book, "Adolescence – a guide for parents", was released this month. Michael will explore the history of drug taking, the latest research on what young people are taking, the latest trends, what to look for and most importantly what to do if you suspect that your son or daughter is using drugs. He will discuss what parents can do to prevent the problems in the first place.
John S Cheetham is a practising psychologist and the founding Director of the Student Achievement Centre. Established in 1981, the Student Achievement Centre provides specialist psychological and educational consulting services to students, parents and teachers. Its focus is on helping students to improve their own performance. John has written a number of books on children, families and education. His latest book ‘Grow Up!’, published by Wilkinsfarago, made The Age best-seller list within three weeks of its release. John does a regular psychology segment on Neil Mitchell’s top rating program on 3AW, and is Consultant Psychologist to Channel 7’s ‘Today Tonight’ program. John suggests that by focussing on ourselves as parents and adults, we are able to create changes that will benefit our children. As our view of our role changes, so does our children’s behaviour and attitudes. If your goal, as a parent, is to bring up a responsible, motivated and healthy young person, that is a good place to start.
Andrew Fuller specialises in working with children, adolescents and their families. He spent many years as a Senior Clinical Psychologist at the Austin Hospital and currently lectures child, adolescent and family psychology in Melbourne. Andrew has been an advisor to David Pennington’s Drug Advisory Committee, the Department of Education’s suicide prevention programs and the Department of Human Services programs for high risk children and adolescents.
Andrew says: "In the past five years or so, we have seen the emergence of a new generation of kids – the Click and Go generation. They have grown up in a world that bombards them with stimulation and consequently have short attention spans, require immediate feedback and have more difficulties with motivation. Parents need to be more flexible than ever in effectively parenting these kids".
Michael Grose has worked with children and young people all his professional life and is one of Australia’s most popular writers and speakers on parenting and family matters. The author of five books for parents, his columns appear in newspapers and magazines across Australia. His popular parenting resources can be found in over 50 per cent of Australian schools. His books are now sold internationally and are translated into three languages. His latest release ‘One Step Ahead’ was launched in April 2002.
Michael’s presentation will take a unique look at how birth order affects a child’s personality and what you can do for a child in each birth position. Why is it that first born children are so different from second born children? Why is it that lawyers are more likely to be first born and car salesmen are more likely to be youngest in the family? What is the secret to raising only children? Is there such a thing as a middle child syndrome?
Dr Judith Paphazy is one of Melbourne’s best known Consultant Psychologists. Her background covers a broad spectrum of professional skills ranging from teaching, broadcasting and newspaper writing to assisting children, adolescents, families and schools with educational and behavioural problems. Judith is a member of the International Council of Psychologists (a United Nations Affiliate), and for the past few years has been working with Professor Grotberg on Resilience, Promotion and Optimism. Judith says: "Life isn’t always fair. Resilience is the human capacity to face, overcome and be strengthened by adversity. We need to promote the internal strength and the social and interpersonal skills in adolescence which give young people empowerment to face life effectively. Has your child the "I have", "I am" and the "I can" skills? Learn how to develop them in your child". If you know how to develop them, watch your child grow on confidence.
Invest in a happier family by spending a fun-filled Sunday with Australia’s best.
