Tech schools, home schooling and early education

Tech schools. The state government is planning to reintroduce tech schools, or Technical Education Centres (TECs), beginning with a new school in Wangaratta and followed by 3 others in Ballarat, Berwick and Heidelberg. Premier Bracks has said the new centres will be linked to the TAFE system and cater to industry needs. (Tech school revived to boost skills; Tech schools reborn as TECs; $32m education boost; Trade schools are back.)

Home schooling. The state government is introducing stricter regulations on home schooling. Those who school from home will have to register with a new body called the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority, who will monitor the education program to make sure that the quality of the program is sufficient. (Home sweet school.)

Early education. Jack Shonkoff has reiterated that investing in preschooling for high-risk children can improve not only the quality of those children's lives, but also the economic return to society as well. He cites a study showing that, for every dollar invested in their preschool program, children produced an economic return of $18 by their 40th year, $17 of which went back to the community. (Spare the early education dollar … spoil the child.)
